Water Board Seats New Directors

March 14, 2008

Four Eastern Fremont County representatives took the board of director´s oath of office at the March 13 meeting of the Upper Arkansas Water Conservancy District.  The Chief Judges of the 11th, 12th and 14th Judicial Districts appointed Bill Jackson, former mayor of Canon City, and Mannie Colon a long time Canon City Farmer & Owner of Colon Orchards to represent the area encompassed by Fremont School District RE-1 as well as John Sandefur, a Penrose area farmer and member of the Penrose Water District, and William McGuire, administrator of the Penrose Chamber of Commerce representing the area encompassed by Fremont School District RE-2.  These four new directors join the nine director board for a total of thirteen seats on the board.  Two Directors, Bob Senderhauf and Bill Donley occupy director seats as at large representatives from Custer County.  Two Directors, Tom French and Tim Canterbury, are from Western Fremont County and five, Glenn Everett, Greg Felt, Frank McMurry, Jeff Ollinger and Pat Alderton, are from Chaffee County.

After several years of work in gathering petition signatures and the holding of an election the Eastern Fremont County petitioners were finally successful in being included in the Upper Arkansas Water Conservancy District.  As stated by Mr. Sandefur the chairman of the Eastern Fremont Inclusion Committee, "water is gold" and it is important that the Upper Arkansas Basin be united in order to protect our water and the best way to do this is for Eastern Fremont being included in the Upper Arkansas Water Conservancy District.
